When Nature Prevails

Joel Bernasor

As the bees gradually peter out,
As the butterfly inaudibly gives up,
As the earthworm reticently wanes:
Beings refuse to notice.

As the ice thaws away
As the seas ascend and consume
As rivers and lakes parch:
My civilization declines to move.

As the downpour becomes aggressive
And seismic shifts more prevalent
As the heat wave unbearable:
Mortals protest a transformation.

As nature’s wrath unleashes
And her judgment prevails,
No wealth, no power, no authority
Not even prayers and miracles can save us
From the ultimate end of our wrongdoing.

This contribution is from Poets for Climate, a collaborative project among the branches of The Climate Reality Project in the PhilippinesAfrica, and Canada in support of When Is Now. The Agam Agenda, together with mentors from each branch, facilitated virtual Pebble Poem Workshops for Climate Reality Leaders every Thursday from 4 August to 1 September 2022. This is one of the many poems that emerged from the workshops. Read more.
