When the Waters Rose

Jocyl Deparine

The rain fell heavy and the rivers swelled.
As the waters rose, my heart rebelled.
The flood engulfed my home and my street
and I felt small beneath nature’s feat.

The mud and debris filled every space
as the flood waters rushed with furious pace.
My belongings and memories washed away,
leaving me with nothing to do but pray.

But as the waters began to recede
I found a strength I didn’t know I’d need.
Together we cleaned and we rebuilt
and though the flood had come, it didn’t wilt us.

So now I stand tall with a story to tell
of the time when the waters rose and fell.
And though it was hard, we emerged unbroken,
ready for the next challenge.
Life has spoken.
